PROFINET for Process Applications

PROFINET is the international standard for an Ethernet based communication system used in automation technology and has been developed by the PROFIBUS User Organisation. Due to its enhanced functionality compared to fieldbus systems and its seamless integration into established Ethernet based IT infrastructure it is expected to reach rapidly a considerably market share in automation.

However some of the requirements in Process Automation are currently not fulfilled by PROFINET as power feeding via bus cable, intrinsically safety or the appropriate integration into established Process Control Systems. For this reason PROFINET will disperse in Process Automation beside the well established PROFIBUS PA technology.

To provide technical solutions for the seamless integration of PROFIBUS PA into PROFINET based systems will become the most challenging task that will guarantee the fulfilment of the process automation specific requirements on the one hand and the protection of investments that have been made into PROFIBUS PA technology on the other hand. The technical solutions for linking PROFIBUS PA and PROFINET are currently specified within the working groups of the PROFIBUS User Organisation and will be explained in detail in the paper.

Short CV:

Dr. Matthias Römer studied Electrical Engineering at Technical University of Darmstadt and University of Glasgow . From 1997 till May 2004 he was research assistant at the Institute of Information Technology in Mechanical Engineering where he was heading the accredited PROFIBUS test laboratory at itm and where he wrote his PhD thesis in the field of conformance testing of fieldbus devices. Since June 2004 Matthias Römer is Marketing Manager PROFIBUS with Endress+Hauser Process Solutions AG. He is responsible for the marketing activities concerning PROFIBUS and the coordination of PROFIBUS related topics within the Endress+Hauser group. Furthermore he is representing E+H at several interest groups and standardization organisations. In the PROFIBUS User Organisation he is heading the Working Group "PROFIBUS PA Marketing".
