In the water industry reduced manning levels and operational/process considerations are demanding enhanced reliability from the process control system. One method increasingly being used to achieve high availability is hot/standby PLC systems. This has some significant implications on the design and implementation of PROFIBUS networks.

This paper discusses some of the issues and the author's practical experiences.
