Industrial wireless networking applications

Abstract

Due to the high costs involved in machine downtimes, the use and growth of wireless communication in industry, in production and in manufacturing is dependent on the reliability of the wireless channel.

Industrial Wireless LAN provides not only data communication according to the IEEE 802.11 standard but also numerous expansions (industry-features) that are essential for industrial customers. Industrial applications, for example, often require redundant, deterministic, real-time communication which is only possible by reserving the bandwidth. This real-time, predictable communication is required even when stations roam from cell to cell.

As well as these features, industrial components need to be of robust construction with extended temperature ranges, high vibration and shock resistance and protection from condensation.

These demands made by industry are addressed and real IWLAN applications where these features are used presented.
